Computing

Rationale

At Pensby Primary School, we believe that Computing is an essential part of preparing children for life in an increasingly digital world. Through our Computing curriculum designed by Hi-Impact, pupils develop the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to become confident, responsible and creative users of technology. We aim to equip children with the digital skills required for future learning, employment and participation in modern society.

Our curriculum is designed to provide a progressive and inclusive computing education that enables all pupils to develop their understanding of computer science, information technology and digital literacy. Children learn how digital systems work, how to create and debug programs, and how technology can be used safely, effectively and creatively to communicate, solve problems and express ideas.

Throughout Key Stage One and Key Stage Two, pupils build strong foundations in computational thinking, learning to break down problems, identify patterns and develop logical solutions. As their knowledge develops, they apply these skills through programming, creating digital content, working with data and exploring how technology impacts the world around them.

Online safety is a fundamental aspect of our Computing curriculum and we teach online safety both discretely and as part of other curriculum areas. Within online safety lessons children are taught how to use technology safely, respectfully and responsibly, enabling them to recognise risks, make informed choices and understand how to keep themselves and others safe online. Through regular discussion and exploration of real-life scenarios, pupils develop the confidence to navigate the digital world positively and responsibly.

The Hi-Impact scheme of work is carefully sequenced to ensure that knowledge and skills build progressively over time. Pupils revisit and deepen their understanding of key concepts, allowing them to make meaningful connections between different aspects of computing and develop increasing independence and confidence in their learning.

By the time pupils leave Pensby Primary School, they will have developed the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to become digitally literate learners. They will be able to use technology purposefully and creatively, understand the principles of computer science, stay safe online and be well prepared for the next stage of their education and life in a rapidly changing technological world.
