Rationale At Pensby Primary School, we believe that learning a modern foreign language provides children with a valuable opportunity to communicate with others, broaden their understanding of the world and develop an appreciation of different cultures. Through our languages curriculum, we aim to inspire curiosity, enthusiasm and a lifelong interest in language learning whilst preparing pupils for the next stage of their education. Our curriculum is designed to develop pupils’ confidence in listening, speaking, reading and writing in another language, enabling them to understand and respond to both spoken and written language from a variety of sources. By acquiring practical and transferable vocabulary, pupils develop communication skills that can be applied in real-life contexts and form strong foundations for future language study. We recognise the importance of preparing children for life in modern Britain and an increasingly interconnected world. Through the study of French and Spanish, pupils develop an understanding of different cultures, traditions and communities, helping them to become respectful, open-minded and globally aware citizens. Language learning encourages children to recognise similarities and differences between cultures while fostering an appreciation of diversity and inclusion. Our curriculum is carefully sequenced to ensure progression in language knowledge and skills throughout Key Stage Two. Children build their understanding of vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation while developing confidence in communicating in both French and Spanish. Through engaging lessons, authentic resources and cross-curricular opportunities, pupils experience language learning as an enjoyable and meaningful part of their education. By the time pupils leave Pensby Primary School, they will have developed the confidence to communicate using basic language structures, an understanding of how languages work, and a positive attitude towards language learning. They will be equipped with the skills, knowledge and cultural awareness needed to successfully transition to secondary education and continue their language-learning journey. |

Progression of Knowledge and Skills in Languages At Pensby Primary, pupils learn both French and Spanish throughout Key Stage Two, developing confidence in listening, speaking, reading and writing whilst gaining an understanding of different cultures and traditions. Year 3 Pupils begin to learn and use familiar vocabulary and simple phrases. They develop accurate pronunciation, respond to simple questions and begin reading and writing single words and short phrases. Children are introduced to basic grammar, including nouns and common verbs. Year 4 Pupils build their confidence in speaking and listening through short conversations and role-play activities. They read and understand familiar phrases, write short sentences from memory and develop their understanding of grammar, including articles and prepositions. Year 5 Pupils become more independent language learners, asking and answering questions and understanding longer spoken and written texts. They write simple sentences from memory, begin using dictionaries and develop their knowledge of verb forms and sentence structure. Year 6 Pupils apply their language skills with increasing confidence and accuracy. They engage in short conversations, read and understand short texts, write simple paragraphs from memory and use a wider range of vocabulary and grammar to communicate meaning effectively. |
