Religious Education

Rationale At Pensby Primary School, we believe that Religious Education plays a vital role in helping children understand themselves, others and the diverse world in which they live. Through our RE curriculum, pupils develop their sense of identity and belonging whilst learning to respect and value the beliefs, traditions and cultures of others. We aim to prepare our children to become thoughtful, respectful and informed citizens who can contribute positively to modern British society and an increasingly interconnected global community. Our curriculum is designed to develop pupils’ knowledge and understanding of Christianity and other principal world faiths, enabling them to explore questions of meaning, purpose, belief and values. Through learning about religions and learning from religions, children are encouraged to reflect on their own experiences and beliefs whilst developing empathy, respect and sensitivity towards those whose views may differ from their own. Following the religions set out in the Wirral Agreed Syllabus for RE, our curriculum is carefully sequenced through a spiral approach that allows pupils to revisit and deepen their understanding of key concepts, beliefs and practices over time. Each year group studies Christianity alongside another world faith, enabling children to make meaningful comparisons and recognise both similarities and differences between religions. Through discussion, enquiry, reflection and the exploration of religious stories, artefacts and celebrations, pupils develop the skills needed to ask thoughtful questions and consider different perspectives. Religious Education makes a significant contribution to pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. Through the exploration of faith, ethics and worldviews, children learn to think critically, express their opinions respectfully and engage in meaningful dialogue about important issues that affect individuals and communities. By the time pupils leave Pensby Primary School, they will have developed a secure knowledge and understanding of Christianity and other major world faiths, alongside the ability to reflect, question and reason thoughtfully. They will be equipped with the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to appreciate diversity, challenge prejudice and engage respectfully with the beliefs and values of others throughout their lives. |

Progression of Knowledge At Pensby Primary School, Religious Education is taught through a progressive journey that moves pupils from knowing about religions to understanding beliefs and practices, and ultimately to reflecting, comparing and evaluating ideas. In Key Stage One, children develop their knowledge of different religions through learning about key stories, people, celebrations, symbols and places of worship. As they move through Key Stage Two, pupils deepen their understanding of how beliefs influence the lives, actions and traditions of individuals and communities. They begin to make connections between different faiths and worldviews, exploring similarities and differences in beliefs and practices. Key Stage 1
