Modern Foreign Languages
INTENT
At Pensby Primary, it is our aim that our languages curriculum prepares our children for their next stage of education and so that they can understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of sources. It is our aim that the acquisition of useful vocabulary will assist in real life situations, therefore laying the foundations for future study and allowing our children to develop an enthusiasm and interest for language beyond Pensby Primary.
It is our intent to foster our children’s curiosity and deepen their understanding of modern Britain and through our languages curriculum, it is our aim to develop our children’s global awareness, providing an opening to other cultures and developing a cultural understanding of the world in which they live.
IMPLEMENTATION
At Pensby Primary school, we follow the National Curriculum for Languages and make lessons interactive and engaging through the use of authentic resources and activities. Because our children progress to several secondary schools, each with varying language curriculums, we have designed our curriculum to support the development of skills and cultural knowledge in two languages (French and Spanish). This allows our children to experience two languages before they progress to secondary school. It is taught discretely in Key Stage Two, but is embedded further throughout the school day, utilising the children’s language development and allowing for further opportunities to develop language skills across the whole curriculum.
IMPACT
The impact of modern foreign languages at Pensby Primary is that we ensure that our children progress to secondary school with enhanced communication skills, as well as language acquisition and development in two languages giving children the confidence in their own ability and a knowledge of the world around them.
