Art and Design
INTENT
The intent of Pensby Primary’s art and design curriculum is to engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art and design. We want pupils to develop critical thinking, and a better understanding of art and design. They will know how art and design has shaped our history, culture and nation.
IMPLEMENTATION
Teachers follow bespoke long term plans and progression maps for art and design which set out the knowledge, skills, vocabulary and cultural capital opportunities for each year group. The long term plans and progression maps outline clear and coherent expectations for each unit of work, following the national curriculum programme of study for art and design.
Children develop their skills through a variety of media and textiles. They explore drawing, painting, printing, textiles, collage, 3D art, and digital media. Additionally, they will be introduced to a diverse range of artworks, gaining insight into the styles, techniques, and vocabulary used by a wide range of artists. Sketchbooks are used to record ideas, experiment with techniques, and reflect on individual progress and our children are proud of the work within their sketchbooks.
When appropriate, art and design lessons are taught as part of a half-termly theme of work, which links with other areas of curriculum: history, geography and design and technology etc. We recognise that art and design can be best taught in blocks or as discrete lessons so that the knowledge, skills and understanding of art and design can be taught effectively.
Pupils use a variety of resources, along with our outdoor environment to inspire and celebrate their work.
IMPACT
Pupil voice demonstrates that children at Pensby Primary are proud of their art and design and confident to discuss their learning from their sketchbooks. Monitoring shows that skills are developed progressively within a range of techniques, demonstrating that our children are confident that they have the skills to attempt all elements of art and design.
Because of high-quality sketchbook work, our children progress to secondary school with the confidence to express their creativity, demonstrating that they have a good understanding of art and design and its impact on culture and history. They know about a range of artists and designers and how they have influenced the world and country.
