Governors
Pensby Primary School Governors
As a governing body, we made the decision to follow the circle model of governance in the academic year 2024-25. Decisions are now not delegated to committees and remain the decision of the full board of governors. There are two full governing body meetings each term, one focusing on budget and finance and one focusing on the curriculum and standards.
Governors are assigned to oversee specific areas that were previously handled by committees and regularly visit the school to communicate with staff responsible for key areas like SEND or safeguarding. Reports are then prepared and shared with the full board.
Our governors are experienced and knowledgeable and are committed to providing effective strategic leadership to ensure the school delivers high-quality education which meets the needs of its children.

Our Governing Body is appointment in line with our Instrument of Governance. Parent Governors are nominated by parents/guardians and if an election is required only parents/guardians can vote. Staff governors are elected by school staff only. LA governors are recommended to the school by the LA and the governing board considers their suitability. Finally Co-Opted governors can be sought through local advertisement, recommendation or as a result of a governor needing to move designation. In all case they are carefully considered by the governing body who determine what skills and knowledge they can bring to the board to strengthen its operation before an appointment is made.
From time to time we may have Associate Governors on our board. Currently we have 3 Associate Governors. Associate Governors can be appointed to fill a need e.g. they have certain skills or knowledge that no other governor has and the schools needs. The Associate Governor may be appointed to ‘cover’ another governor who cannot attended for a period of time or they could be a member of staff whose role requires them to attend many governors meetings so providing continuty and purpose to their contriution. In these cases, the Governing Board will determine if they have voting rights or not. Currently our 3 Associated Governors have full voting rights and this is recording in governors minutes. They are representative of the staff, parents and community governors.
All governor appointments, resignations and voting rights are detailed in the Governing Body minutes.
Our Governing Body members are very active in the school, particularly in supporting the monitoring of teaching and learning. When they attend school events or carry out their work within the school, they sign in so that their attendance is monitored.
Governors follow the circle model of governance and meet as a full governing body twice each term. Governors are linked to subjects and areas of the school through our Learning Teams so that they know all aspects of the school can and are monitored regularly. As the governors are so proactive and involved in school life, they know it well and are able to speak from direct experience and with understanding.
